Open Science: what does it mean for the arts and humanities?

UBB Open Science Working Group presents the seminar-debate:
“Open Science: what does it mean for the arts and humanities?”
Presenters: Nicolaie Constantinescu, Christian Schuster, Rada Varga

Thursday 16.06.2022, 14.00-15.30

About the topic: Open Science (OS) implies Open Access to publications and scientific infrastructures/data/software/methods, Open Educational Resources, but also Open Evaluation or Citizen Science. Where it is feasible, OS enables the acceleration of scientific research (see the international response to the COVID-19 crisis), bringing added inclusiveness and accessibility for the scientific community, socio-economic or socio-cultural actors, citizens. Beyond the well-known Open Access, Romania and BBU have a significant gap to catch up with EU competitors and partners in terms of generating OS. The presentation will focus on the extent to which Open Science concepts have been or can become applicable in BBU’s School of Arts and Humanities.

About the speakers: Nicolaie Constantinescu is an associate professor at the Department of Communication Sciences, Faculty of Letters, University of Bucharest – and also responsible for the implementation of projects related to the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) at the National Research and Development Institute for Physics and Nuclear Engineering “Horia Hulubei”.
Lect. dr. Christian Schuster (Faculty of European Studies of UBB, Vice President of the BBU Senate) will provide insights as Director of the Transylvania Digital Humanities Centre.
Researcher dr. Rada Varga (DigiHUBB) will exemplify with practical applications from her own projects.

The Open Science Working Group at UBB was established in 2022 with the support of the CNFIS-FDI-2022-179 Project “Promoting and supporting Open Science practices in excellent research at the Babeș-Bolyai University of Cluj-Napoca”. The group includes the BBU Scientific Council leadership along with volunteers interested in the topic and remains, as the name implies, open to all interested.
